Excess weight increases the risk of stomach, liver, ovary, gall bladder, pancreas, thyroid, blood cancer and a type of brain tumour, researchers from Washington University found
Loss of appetite, feeling sick and having no energy are all warning signs of stomach cancer.

A Pentagon study has found high rates of cancer among military pilots and for the first time has shown that ground crews who fuel, maintain and launch those aircraft have also developed life-threatening conditions.

Men can reduce risk of bowel cancer by 20% if they stick to diet high in veg and beans
Men who eat a diet rich in vegetables, whole grains, beans and lentils can cut their risk of bowel cancer by more than a fifth, a study has found.
Women were also included in the research but no link between eating lots of plant foods and lower cancer risk was uncovered, which the scientists put down to men having an overall higher risk of the illness.

Researchers develop new blood test that can detect prostate cancer with a claimed 94% accuracy
Researchers from the University of East Anglia (UEA) in the United Kingdom have developed a blood test that can detect prostate cancer with 94 percent accuracy.
The 94 percent accuracy rate beats the currently used prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test used around the world, which is only able to accurately detect prostate cancer in one out of four men who test positive.

A survey by the charity, The Eve Appeal, reveals one in five women believe the five cancers – womb, ovarian, cervical, vulval and vaginal cancers – are linked to sexual promiscuity.
Nearly one in five new cervical cancers diagnosed from 2009 to 2018 were in women 65 and older, according to a new UC Davis study. But what has experts concerned is that, according to the study, more older women (71%) had late-stage cancer than younger women (48%), which corresponds to lower survival rates that only get worse with age.
In general, if cervical cancer is diagnosed after it has spread to nearby tissues, organs or lymph nodes, the five-year relative survival rate is 59%, according to the National Cancer institute (NCI). Continue reading

God gives you only one body, Deane Berg always said, so you’d better take care of the one you’ve got. A physician assistant at the veterans’ hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, she knew that spotting between periods wasn’t unusual for a forty-nine-year-old woman, but she went to the doctor anyway. Her two daughters had already lost their father to lung cancer, so Berg wanted to stick around.
Just perimenopause, the doctor concluded after a cursory examination. Probably a blood clot, the nurse practitioner told her when a subsequent ultrasound showed something on an ovary. “It’s not going to be cancer,” the gynecological surgeon said before removing both ovaries on the day after Christmas in 2006. But, when Berg went for her follow-up, she read the words on the pathology report before the surgeon had a chance to break the news: serous carcinoma. She cried, and the surgeon did, too. She would now need a full hysterectomy, chemotherapy, and a great deal of luck. Diagnosis and conventional treatment
The diagnosis of prostate cancer relies heavily on the results of a prostate biopsy. A pathologist will analyze the biopsy and assignment a Gleason score or grade. Gleason scores reflect how likely it is that it tumor will spread. The score can vary between 2 and 10 where 2 indicates a small likelihood of spread and 10 indicates a high likelihood of spread. The oncologist will also determine the size of the tumor, if there are cancer cells in nearby lymph nodes or if there is any cancer present in distant tissues (metastasis). The choice of conventional treatment is based on PSA level, Gleason scores, and other information about the prostate tumor. Unfortunately, a negative biopsy (no disease seen) does not exclude the diagnosis of prostate cancer (i.e., a false negative result). Continue reading

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located just beneath the urinary bladder. It is part of the urinary system and the reproductive system. There are passages through the prostate that carry either urine or semen. In fact, the prostate also helps produce semen, the thick fluid that carries sperm cells produced in the testicles. The prostate surrounds the upper part of the urethra, which is the tube that carries urine from the bladder.
Prostate function is regulated by testosterone, the male sex hormone, which is produced primarily in the testicles. Prostate cancer is a cancer that starts in the prostate gland, but may spread to other organs and tissues of the body.
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide. In 2012, for example, there were 1.1 million cases of prostate cancer and over 300,000 men died from the disease. Continue reading
