Truth About What’s Sprayed on Veggies in Grocery Stores Has People Outraged

There has been an increase in awareness among Americans regarding their food choices. Consumers are now more committed to avoiding ultra-processed foods, seed oils, and artificial additives. There are growing concerns about using toxic pesticides to cultivate fruits and vegetables.

That’s why many people were upset to learn that additional chemicals may be in the produce they buy from grocery stores.

Nothing is what it seems anymore. Chelsea (@ the_holistic_schoolpsych) is concerned about what’s happening in the produce department. She explains the mist we often see isn’t just water but Produce Maxx, a food-grade sanitizer made of Hypochlorous Acid. But what is it, and is it safe?

This hospital-grade disinfectant is more effective than chlorine bleach in fighting harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Our white blood cells naturally produce it to combat infections in the body. Despite its strength, it has a neutral pH, making it safe for skin care products and wound treatment and even effective for reducing bacteria levels on eyelids and eyelashes. It is considered safe for long-term daily use and has been rated between levels one and three in terms of safety by the EWG when used in cosmetic products.

This disinfectant has been credited with reducing contamination on cruise lines from norovirus outbreaks and effectively combating pathogens like hepatitis A, salmonella, and strep. Grocery stores use it to keep fresh produce free from germs because of its ability to kill potentially deadly pathogens while maintaining a high level of safety. Although no one would like to consider consuming even more chemicals, the efficacy of this one may help prevent a much more severe illness from occurring.

Overall, people don’t feel alarmed once they knew what it was. Viewer @Marie remarked, “Regardless of whatever treatment your store uses. You should always wash your veggies, considering people at the store touch the produce, and some people have bad hygienic habits.” That’s a brilliant point. This is probably why they spray this on there, to begin with. If they didn’t, there’s a good chance we all get more illnesses than we do, and many of these can be deadly, especially for those who have weak immune systems.

Although it’s always concerning to hear that something isn’t what we thought it was, it could also be far worse. Rather than using a more harmful chemical to keep produce clean, grocery stores like Sprouts have thankfully chosen this more natural option. Although it may not sound appealing, it’s important to remember that even our drinking water is treated with chlorine bleach. It would be interesting to learn if this could actually be a safer alternative for that, too.
