By now you may know that there are MANY options for detecting Breast Cancer outside of traditional mammography, which may come with some dangerous side effects. One option that I have written about in the past is the Oncoblot test, created by Dr. Dorothy Morré and the late Dr. James Morré. Now the Morrés’ company, Mor-NuCo Enterprises, is working with the Laboratory for Advanced Medicine to offer the IvyGene test for detection of breast cancer as well as lung, prostate and colon cancers.
How the IvyGene Test for Breast Cancer Works
According to IvyGene Labs, the IvyGene test for Breast Cancer “uses advanced DNA sequencing methods to detect the DNA methylation pattern of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in blood samples in order to both confirm the presence of cancer and give quantitative data.”
What this means in layman’s terms is that IvyGene is truly unique in the world of cancer marker testing.
Many genetic tests look for either DNA mutations or circulating tumor cells to determine the possibly of cancer. IvyGene, on the other hand, measures DNA methylation at targeted sites in the body. It lets you know with great accuracy if cancer is present and quantifiable information about the specific disease type.
The Importance of Methylation
To get a good idea of how IvyGene works, lets dive in to the importance of methylation for the body– and for cancer.
Methylation is a complex biochemical process where simple carbon and hydrogen substances are converted into hundreds of functions for the body. Think of it this way: spark plugs in your car help to instigate certain chemical processes which make your car go. Methylation is the “spark” that can keep your body going in a healthy way!
Some important functions of methylation include:
– Gene expression
– DNA repair
– Detoxification processes
– Immune System function
– Hormone metabolism
You can see why methylation is so important for overall health!
But that is not all. Proper methylation is extremely important for preventing Breast Cancer and other diseases associated with hormone imbalance, Methylation is also the process through which one kind of hormone can morph into another kind; converting serotonin to melatonin is one example.
Methylation and Cancer
Of course, cancer cells have a completely different methylation process from that of healthy cells. The IvyGene Test uses this difference to it’s advantage when determining disease presence in the body. When methylation is abnormal or turned off, healthy genes can get “turned off” as well while unhealthy ones get “turned on.”
Changes in gene expression correlate with changes in DNA methylation patterns. For example, in specific sites, processes of “hypermethylation” are evidence when cancer is present. In addition, during cancer cell apoptosis (cancer cell death), cancer cell DNA is shed into the bloodstream. This tumor material is called circulating tumor DNA, or ctDNA. The IvyGene test measures this as well.
The IvyGene Test can be ordered through a qualified physician. You can access their growing database of U.S.-based physicians who order the test HERE.
Support Healthy Methylation in Your Body!
Whether you get the IvyGene Test for Breast Cancer or not, helping your methylation pathways function their best will keep you on a Healthy Breast path no matter what your situation. There are many ways to do this, including reducing your toxic load, lowering stress, supporting your detoxification pathways and including estrogen-balancing, detoxifying super-foods like flaxseed or fermented soy in your diet.
You can also add targeted supplementation to support your methylation pathways such as Methyl Support or Brocco Power to your daily routine. Methyl Support contains naturally occurring folates while Brocco Power contains sulforaphane, a scientifically proven cancer stem cell-busting substance extracted from broccoli sprouts.
