Perchlorate (sometimes referred to as Perchlorate 7) is a hidden danger that has been rising to the surface over the last decade. Perchlorate effects the thyroid and is classified as a “known carcinogen” by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The good news about this dangerous substance, however, is that there are concrete ways to minimize exposure and to protect yourself.
Perchlorate in Drinking Water and the Food Supply
Perchlorate is a toxic chemical used in many industries, including aerospace and the military.
Rocket fuel, explosives, firearms, fireworks and bleaches may contain perchlorate as can some batteries and automobile components.
Many agricultural fertilizers also contain hefty amounts of perchlorate. This, as well as it’s sometimes airborne nature, is a big reason why municipal water supplies across the country and the world often carry high amounts. Studies have found commercial and even some organic produce to have high levels of perchlorate too.
According to a report in Scientific American, traces of perchlorate can be found in just about everyone. The California Department of Toxic Substances Control states that “perchlorate is becoming a serious threat to human health and water resources.”
Perchlorate and your Thyroid
Perchlorate has some particularly damaging effects on the endocrine and reproductive systems. It can also wreak havoc on hormone balance and metabolism. Perchlorate is similar in nature to bromide, fluoride and chlorine and acts in a similar way in the thyroid gland.
A 2010 study conducted by the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles found that perchlorate exposure led to a reduction in thyroid hormone levels, impaired thyroid hormone action and an increased risk of autoimmune thyroid disease.
The most common thyroid autoimmune condition in the United States is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. The risk for thyroid cancer can increase dramatically with the presence of hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s. And because the thyroid is one of the main hormonal regulators, thyroid imbalance can also lead to a higher risk of hormone-related cancers like Breast Cancer.
Iodine May Hold the Key to Perchlorate Protection
Iodine is the literal “food” for the thyroid, but the thyroid is not the only area of the body that requires it. Your reproduction glands, including the breasts, also have cellular receptors for iodine. Sufficient iodine has been shown to prevent breast cancer, ovarian cancer, ovarian cysts and fibrocystic breast disease. Like bromide, fluoride and chlorine, perchlorate blocks the absorption of this vital mineral.
Roughly 95% of the world’s population is deficient in iodine. The first step to finding out if you are one of them is to get your iodine levels checked through an “iodine loading” lab test. Also get tested for bromide and fluoride toxicity. If you have high “halide” toxicity, there is a good chance that you have perchlorate toxicity as well. Once you know your iodine levels, you can consult with a 7 Essentials(TM) coach or other healing professional to find out the best iodine supplement amount for you.
Protect and Detox Your Body
Other steps you can take to make sure perchlorate toxicity does not effect you is to use a high-quality water filter for not only your tap but also for your shower. Choose only organic food sources and include chelating foods in your diet like chlorella, spirulina and cilantro.
It is also important to keep your liver strong as you detox and heal. Remember that focused detoxification will not only flush out perchlorate but other toxins and heavy metals as well. Two sure-fire ways to give your liver a boost is with regular SA Wilson coffee enemas and by taking The 7 Essentials System(TM) Liver Support Formula. Liver Support contains N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC), which assists in the formation of the super-antioxidant glutathione.
Perchlorate toxicity is real. However, there is a clear way back to health. Make sure that you are drinking clean, filtered water, getting adequate amounts of quality iodine in your diet every day (table salt is not an option!) and giving your liver plenty of support for detoxification.
Then spread the word to others to do the same!
